What is a Certified Professional Bookkeeper?
The CPB designation is a national bookkeeping standard set and maintained by CPB Canada. It reflects the level of knowledge, education, and skills necessary to carry out all key bookkeeping functions through Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Payroll, Sales Taxes, Inventory and General Bookkeeping. It also means annual continuing professional development requirements must be met and a code of conduct must be adhered to.
CPB Canada's certification pathway has three levels: Apprentice, Technician, and the CPB designation. The member's level of accomplishment is shown on their digital badge.
Because CPB Canada controls the badge, it is revoked if a member leaves or falls out of good standing. This means a current badge provides evidence of both the level earned and current membership standing.
Example of a CPB Canada Technician digital badge.The word 'Bookkeeper' isn't a protected title in Canada, so anyone can use it. A CPB Canada credential is one way to know someone's been tested against a real standard, not just taking their word for it.
Look for CPB Canada's digital credentials online as proof a bookkeeper is a member in good standing. It validates the member's knowledge and experience. In the example to the right, you can see the badge identifies the member as a Technician.

What Happened To IPBC?
If you come across an older CPB credential carrying the name Institute of Professional Bookkeepers of Canada (IPBC), you're looking at the predecessor name of today's CPB Canada.
IPBC was founded in 2007 to bring Canadian bookkeepers together and help establish professional standards in an otherwise unregulated field. The organization rebranded as Certified Professional Bookkeepers of Canada (CPB Canada) in 2020.

So an older IPBC CPB credential isn't a different designation. It's an earlier version of the same professional credentialing organization. If you see an older credential like the one to the left ... it was issued by IPBC prior to the CPB Canada rebranding and new digital badges.
Finding A CPB
CPB Canada has changed how its member credentials are verified. The Find a Bookkeeper directory that was previously available is no longer public-facing, so there's a little more detective work involved if you're trying to find a CPB. You need to know the person's name before you can verify their current status.
That makes the digital badge particularly useful. Unfortunately, finding one can be a bit of a scavenger hunt.
When I went looking for an example of a current badge for this article, I found that many websites still display CPB credentials, but not necessarily a current digital badge. I searched six different websites before finally finding this Technician-level example.
The takeaway?
Don't assume that seeing 'CPB' on a website tells you the person's current membership status. The credential itself may be perfectly legitimate. It still represents a professional accomplishment they earned. If the badge is absent, it likely means they are not a current member. That could be for a number of reasons.
So, if you're hiring a bookkeeper and current standing matters to you, you'll need to do a little homework. And current standing does have merit. It means they are current in their profession. Look for the current CPB Canada digital badge or verify the person's status directly with CPB Canada.
Apparently, finding a CPB isn't quite as simple as it used to be. 😉
